The only difference with the Plug method compared to the FUE today is that we use much smaller punches (about 4mm in diameter plugs versus 0.8 mm in diameter FU grafts today). The small FUE punches of today require strong magnification worn by the physician.

Later, the Strip method or Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) was developed to obtain more follicular units that could be cut into any size graft: single hair, Follicular Units (FU), or Multiple Follicular Units (MFU) grafts. Today, the MFU grafts are smaller, linear in shape, and appear natural. They are particularly very useful to decrease the transection rate to about 3% compared to the FUE method of about 30% to 80%. Unfortunately, it is impossible to obtain MFU grafts with the FUE method.
