Frizzy Hair and Breakage

Are you tired of unmanageable, frizzy hair? Guys can have just as many issues with dry, fly-away hair as women. You understand if you’re a man blessed with natural waves or curls. How can you keep your curly hair healthy and attractive and keep the frizz at bay?

You can thank genetics for giving you a curly mane. Although researchers believe that curly hair is inherited, they haven’t identified a specific gene. Investigations have proven that the curly hair trait is dominant, while straight hair is recessive.

What Causes Frizziness?

The good news is that you don’t need to understand genetics to enjoy your full-bodied hair. Whether your locks have slight natural waves or springy curls doesn’t matter, as they require special attention. One of the most significant challenges of curly hair is dryness and a frizzy appearance.

You’ll notice the cuticles when you study a human hair strand under a microscope. These are microscopic layers of scales that protect each strand from the weather. If your cuticles are healthy, they will lay smooth and flat. Natural oils from your scalp nourish them and keep them soft.

However, heat, humidity, and harsh chemicals can damage these cuticle layers. They won’t lay flat and become dry and brittle. Your natural oils escape as the humidity puffs the hair shafts and causes an overall “frizzy” appearance.

A Man’s Guide to Caring for Frizzy Hair

Nothing is as attractive and elegant as a gentleman with wavy or curly manes. Are you frustrated with fighting frizziness and damaged hair? Try these tips to keep your curl under control.

1. Don’t Wash Your Hair So Often

It’s essential to wash your scalp and hair to keep it clean, healthy, and looking its best. However, you can have too much of a good thing. Shampooing too frequently can strip away your mane’s natural oils and make them frizzy.

Instead of washing your hair every day, consider trying every other day. Be sure to use a shampoo and conditioner formulated for your hair type. While most men who battle the frizzies have dry hair and scalps, yours may be oily.

Or, you may have a combination hair type that requires different shampoo formulas.

Of course, shampooing every other day doesn’t mean you ignore your locks on off days. Holding your head under the shower and adding moisturizer will freshen your hair and scalp. If you must shampoo your hair daily because of oily issues, choose a gentle product for daily use.

2. Avoid Overly Hot Showers – They Can Damage Your Locks

A steamy bath or shower can melt away grime and stress if the water isn’t too hot. Not only can hot water dry and damage your skin, but it can do the same to your hair. Hot water can irritate your hair follicles and lead to frizziness, breakage, and even hair loss.

Technically, washing your hair in cold water is healthier. It may stimulate the nerves and blood vessels in your scalp. You can preserve more natural oils and reduce the chances of stripping and frizzy hair.

It becomes complicated because showering in cold water can be just as miserable as steaming water. Try warm water if you don’t want to freeze while washing your hair in the shower. You’ll be comfortable enough to shower, and you could do a quick hair rinse with cold water.

Don’t make the all-to-common mistake of grabbing a towel after your shower and scrubbing your hair dry. Such a rough treatment can damage your hair and make it frizzy. Instead, use the towel to squeeze out excess water or let your hair dry naturally.

Heat can be profoundly damaging, regardless of your hair type. Curly or wavy hair is more susceptible to damage caused by styling appliances and products. If you must use a hair dryer, use the relaxed setting. Try to limit your use of straightening irons or any other heat treatments.

3. Toss the Brush

Maybe you’ve already learned from experience that hairbrushes can be your curly hair’s worst enemy. Brushes can strip away your hair’s natural oils, pull it out of shape, and cause massive frizz. They can also lead to frustrating tangles, breakage, and hair loss.

Give your brush a toss and opt for a wide-toothed comb. If your mane is long, separate your hair into sections. Start with the lower ends of the hair and gently comb downwards as you work up to the roots. Consider using your fingers to gently smooth and contour your curly locks.
